Differences with LINFO 2402
The goal of LINFO2401 is to be an introduction to Open Source. In LINFO2401, the project is a way to learn and interact with the community. There’s no expectation on the amount of technical work done. A one-line patch might be a better LINFO2401 project if that one-line has a story, was discussed with the community.
Students who want to go further may investigate LINFO2402.
In LINFO2402, there’s no course, no exam. You simply work on an Open Source project but you must demonstrate that your work is important enough to be considered a "major contribution" and justify the credits.
It is perfectly allowed to continue working on the same open source project than your LINFO2401 project but the work itself should, of course, be different. It should always be clear what part of your work is for LINFO2401 and what part is for LINFO2402.
Before taking LINFO2402, you must present the work you plan to do and get an agreement. Prior art on LINFO2401 might help as it demonstrates your motivation to work on the project.
My advices:
- Choose your project and take LINFO2401 as an opportunity to meet the community.
- With the community, choose a larger contribution you are motivated to tackle. It should be one particular subject, not "fixing as many bugs as possible".
- Present all of this to the LINFO2402 committee with your LINFO2401 as a proof of commitment.
